Employer reviewing a resume during a security guard job interview, highlighting career outcomes from Guard Training

Building up a skilled and high-performing security team begins with well-crafted job descriptions.

When security companies are clear about what they’re looking for in applicants and use the necessary language to set expectations, they can hire a security guard who fits seamlessly into their operations and culture.

Discover which components belong in a security guard job description and why you should include them. Then, use our templates to streamline your recruitment process and appeal to quality candidates.

Key Components of a Security Guard Job Description

A professionally prepared security guard job description will clearly set expectations and attract the applicants who will benefit your organization.

Missing or vague information can create confusion, discourage strong candidates, or even lead to early turnover, which is why we’re discussing key sections to include.

1. Job Title

The job title is what will catch candidates’ attention first as they browse job post listings on sites such as Zip Recruiter and Indeed, so it should be straightforward, precise, and reflective of the role’s primary responsibilities.

Examples include:

  • Entry-Level Security Guard
  • Unarmed Security Officer
  • Night-Shift Security Guard
  • Data Center Security Specialist
  • Retail Security Guard
  • Construction Site Security Guard
  • Event Security Officer

A descriptive title helps applicants instantly see if the role fits them and sets the right expectations.

2. Summary

The job description’s summary gives a quick snapshot of the role, location, and work environment. It sets the tone and shows what makes your company and position appealing.

For example: “Join our team serving clients across California for over 10 years, delivering top-notch security while growing your career in a supportive environment.”

You might also engage candidates with questions such as: “Do you take pride in maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor?” or “Would you like to join a skilled team that values and respects every member?” Questions like these encourage applicants to reflect on their own qualities and aspirations, making it easier for them to envision themselves as part of your organization.

The job summary can also be tailored to reflect your company’s priorities.

For example, if your company is focusing on improving customer service and you want guards who interact positively with clients or guests, emphasize this in the summary:

“We’re seeking a security guard responsible for maintaining safety while assisting guests and providing professional, courteous service.”

If you want to attract entry-level guards at lower salaries, highlight training and growth opportunities to attract candidates starting their security careers:

“This entry-level position provides hands-on training, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement within the company.”

3. Responsibilities & Duties

The next section should explain what the guard is expected to do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Outlining the main responsibilities will attract personnel who are capable and prepared to handle the role, rather than those who may not have the skills or experience to meet the demands of the position.

Through bullet points, some of the following tasks can be listed, depending on the type of site, shift, or security level required:

  • Core Security Tasks: Patrols, access control, crowd control, observation, responding to alarms or emergencies.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Writing incident reports, maintaining daily activity logs, and communicating findings to supervisors.
  • Specialized Duties: Depending on the environment, this may include monitoring digital surveillance systems, controlling sensitive access areas, escorting visitors, handling cash or valuables, or enforcing specific site rules.
  • Customer Interaction: Assisting visitors and employees by providing directions, answering questions, and addressing concerns while maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Emergency Response: Following procedures for medical emergencies, fires, environmental hazards, or security breaches.
  • Collaboration: Working with other security personnel, law enforcement, or internal teams.

Avoid using overly formal or complex language, so candidates can easily understand what the role involves.

4. Required Skills and Qualifications

Include both required and preferred qualifications to ensure candidates meet minimum standards while leaving room for additional skills that can add value to the organization.

You can also list preferred qualifications such as additional certifications (Public Relations, Legal Aspects, Access Control) or experience with specific security technologies or software.

Although companies may have a long list of required skills, few candidates will meet every single one.

However, adding more to this list can encourage applicants to assess themselves realistically and consider the strengths they do bring. This way, you’ll attract motivated candidates who are confident in their abilities and willing to grow into the role.

5. Work Environment & Expectation

This section is not required, but can be helpful t describe the environmental expectations of the role

For example, companies can outline that typical shifts may range from 8 to 12 hours and can include nights, weekends, and overtime. If there is a primary post location, it can be specified, such as“Main lobby of our downtown office building or“Warehouse and loading docks at our distribution center.

Describing the location, expected shift lengths, and physical conditions helps candidates assess their suitability and ensures that, if they proceed further in the application process, they won’t be surprised or unprepared for the realities of the role.

Some employers also highlight the physical demands in the role, such as“can include long periods of standing, walking, climbing stairs, or lifting up to 50 pounds.

6. Compensation & Benefit

This section outlines the rewards of the position, providing clear information on pay, perks, and otherincentives for qualified candidates.

Benefits make the position more desirable and can be tailored to highlight what sets your company apart. Typical offerings include

  • Health Coverage: Medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Paid Time Off: Vacation, sick leave, holidays, and bereavement leave
  • Retirement Plans: 401(k) or other retirement savings plans with employer contributions
  • Training & Certifications: Opportunities for CPR or First Aid certification, or access to online security courses such as those offered atGuard Trainin.
  • Career Growth: Clear paths for advancement to senior or supervisory positions
  • Additional Perks: Uniforms and equipment provided, flexible scheduling, wellness programs, employee recognition programs, and company discounts

Companies can choose toinclude a specific pay range or omit it depending on their strategy and market considerations.

Including salary shows your company is transparent and helps attract candidates who are comfortable with the offered compensation. It also saves time by filtering out those who aren’t a good fit for the role financially

On the other hand, omitting salary allows flexibility in negotiating with candidates based on their experience or certifications
