Step-By-Step on How to Get a Guard Card in California

Step 1: Complete The Initial 8-Hour Training

Before applying for a California guard card, you need to complete the Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force, totaling 8 hours, with 4 of those hours held in person.

Step 2: Submit Your BSIS Application

You can apply online through BreEZe, California’s licensing system.

Step 3: Complete Live Scan Fingerprinting

Live scan is the fingerprinting step required for the BSIS guard card background check. It submits your fingerprints to the California DOJ and FBI as part of the application process.

Step 4: Wait for BSIS Review

BSIS reviews your application and background check after they are submitted.

Step 5: Complete the 32-Hour Security Guard Training

After registration or employment begins, new guards must complete 32 hours of additional BSIS training. The first 16 hours are due within 30 days. The remaining 16 hours are due within 6 months.

Separate from our package pricing (starting at $80), BSIS lists the initial guard card application fee as $60. Additionally, BSIS also lists the renewal fee at $44 and the replacement card fee at $25. Live-scan fees may vary by provider and location.
