United States map with American flag representing online security guard training requirements by state

Introduction

Security guard requirements vary widely across the United States, and there is no single national standard that applies everywhere. Some states require formal registration through a state agency, others rely on employer-based systems, and a few have no statewide licensing structure at all.

Before beginning a journey to become a security guard or hiring security personnel for a security firm, you need a clear understanding of the rules that apply in each state.

This guide breaks down how each state approaches security guard licensing, including who oversees regulation, basic eligibility rules, training expectations, fees, renewals, and any armed security requirements. It’s designed as a quick reference to compare state-by-state differences and understand what is required to obtain and maintain a valid license in each location.

Rhode Island state flag representing online security guard training and guard card class requirements

Security personnel must be at least 18 years old, and employers set most training standards and hiring requirements.

Individuals may not perform security guard duties without being properly registered under a licensed employer. Background checks and fingerprinting are required for security employees as part of federal and state screening processes, and compliance is overseen by the Attorney General’s Office.

Separate from security registration, Rhode Island also regulates pistol permits through the Attorney General. These permits are issued only to qualified individuals aged 21 or older who demonstrate need, submit fingerprints, and provide supporting documentation from an employer when the permit is job-related. Permits expire after four years, and approval does not grant authority to use a firearm.

Wyoming does not require a statewide license for security guards, and there is no state-level registration process for unarmed positions. Regulation is handled locally, with some cities such as Casper requiring their own licensing or registration through municipal authorities. In many areas, security guard requirements are set directly by employers rather than a state agency.

Most positions require applicants to be at least 18 years old, legally authorized to work in the United States, and able to pass a criminal background check that includes fingerprinting. Training standards are also determined by the hiring company, and employers are responsible for completing required background screening for all security personnel.

Security Guard Licensing FAQs

Find out more about obtaining a security guard license in the United States with these answers to frequently asked questions:

Why do security guard requirements vary so much between states?

Security guard requirements vary so much between states because there is no single national licensing system for private security in the United States. Instead, each state government creates and enforces its own laws through agencies such as licensing boards, departments of public safety, or consumer protection offices.

Can security guards work in multiple states?

Some states recognize out-of-state experience, but most require separate licensing to work legally. For example, the Alabama Security Regulatory Board may grant licenses to out-of-state applicants if the other state has similar standards and offers reciprocal treatment.

What’s the most common reason applications get delayed or denied?

The most common reason security guard applications get delayed or denied is problems during the background check process. While it is well known that a felony conviction can disqualify someone from obtaining a guard license, repeated misdemeanor offenses or unresolved court cases can also delay approval or lead to denial.

Paperwork mistakes and missing documents are another common issue, which is why applicants should carefully review their applications and identification documents before submitting everything to the state’s licensing agency.

Do security guards always need formal classroom training?

Security guards do not always need formal classroom training, though many states still require some level of instruction before a guard can begin working. Training rules differ across the country, and the format, length, and subject matter depend on the state and the type of security position.

Some states allow online training to obtain a security guard license, though it usually must be completed through an approved training provider. Any training completed that is not state-approved or properly certified may be considered invalid and rejected during the licensing process.

How long does it usually take to get licensed as a guard in the U.S.?

The time it takes to get licensed as a security guard in the U.S. usually ranges from about 2 to 6 weeks, though the process can move faster or slower depending on the state and the type of license being requested.

Do security guards need ongoing training after getting licensed?

Security guards may need ongoing training after getting licensed, though the requirements depend heavily on state law and the type of security licenses (armed guards typically must complete annual or biannual training). Some states require refresher courses or continuing education during license renewal periods, while others have little or no ongoing training requirements for unarmed guards.
